Early Signs Help

Health Screening for Patients

One of the simplest things we can do for our health is a regular health screen profile. These are screening tests whereby samples of a person’s blood and urine are tested for several parameters, that can give an indication of underlying health conditions.

Often, these underlying conditions do not present themselves (i.e. show any symptoms) in the early stages. But, if left undetected and therefore untreated, they can progress to a stage where symptoms do appear. By then, it is necessary to undergo expensive treatments to rectify the condition. In some cases, such as kidney damage, when symptoms do appear, it is often too late to go back to normal. The damage is done and the individual must live with their condition.

This is why early detection of diseases is important. The best method for early detection is a blood and urine screen. These we offer through our HMC packages.

After all, our health is the most important asset that we have. Do not allow the disease to put a premature end to your life, career, financial stability, and make you a burden to your loved ones. All this can be prevented with early detection through our customisable health screen profiles.

Why Health Screen?

The questions many people have are:

“Why should I do a health screen? I feel fine!”
“Aren’t these tests meant for when I already have an illness?”

All these questions can be answered by this: health screens are designed to tell you about the condition of your body.

From here, our doctors can perform accurate diagnosis on the signs and symptoms that the patient exhibits. From there, treatment can be prescribed.

For healthy patients, the health screening could detect whether they are at risk of a certain disease, or already have one that has not yet presented itself (no signs or symptoms). These underlying conditions that are already in the patient’s system at an early stage, and early detection of these conditions will provide important information for diagnosis, treatment and preventive measures, thereby inhibiting the further development of the conditions.

Early detection and treatment are far more preferable to treatment when the disease is at an advanced stage. At this early stage, treatment and management have a smaller chance of complications and a higher chance of success. Therefore, periodic health checkups and our early detection health screening is crucial to manage your health.

For those under 30 years of age, health screening is recommended every two years. However, for those individuals who are 30 years or older, a yearly health screening is highly recommended. For those over 50 years of age, more age-related screening tests are conducted.

Below is a list of some of the common tests conducted at a health screening:
  • Cholesterol tests
The doctor will check a patient’s cholesterol level if the patient is obese, is a smoker or frequently drinks alcohol.
  • Blood Pressure Test
This is one of the most important tests conducted by the physician. If the blood pressure is high, further tests may be undertaken to determine the cause.
  • Mammograms, Osteoporosis and Pap Smear Tests
These tests are undertaken to prevent cervical cancers and breast cancers, as well as other disorders that affect women.
  • Diabetes Test
The patient may be checked for diabetes if they have a family history, or they have high cholesterol and high blood pressure.
  • STDs
For those who are sexually active, especially where there is more than one sexual partner, screenings for STDs are highly recommended.
  • Prostate Cancer Tests
Men must get themselves tested for prostate cancer if they are obese, have higher levels of testosterone and/or are over 50 years of age.
  • Colorectal Cancer
This test is highly recommended for those above the age of 50, with inflammatory bowel disorder, colorectal polyps and inherited mutations or gene defects.

A health screening session will typically take between 30 minutes and half a day. This depends on how many tests the doctor needs to conduct. Other common tests include x-rays, blood tests, fecalysis and urinalysis.

Detecting a condition or disease early can help to prevent a chronic disorder from developing. Furthermore, complications can also be avoided by health screenings.

Word of Caution

We understand there is currently a profusion of smaller laboratories operating throughout Malaysia. Many of these laboratories are uncertified, lack the necessary accreditation and are in all likelihood not registered with the relevant authorities. We know them as “back-room laboratories” and in addition to the above, they usually utilise older equipment which is not calibrated often.

It is out of our concern for the people of Malaysia that we recommend not using the services of such laboratories, attractive as their pricing may be. The test results they provide are often inaccurate or misrepresented so as to enable an unethical GP to sell the patient unnecessary medications.

There are many established, registered and accredited laboratories such as ours operating in Malaysia. Because an accurate picture of your health is vital in preparing for future issues or dealing with existing ones, we recommend you use the services of reputable haematology laboratories.
